Series:  "Nehemiah: Rebuilding Urban Christian Community” (Part VII)
Title:    "Money and Justice."
Text:    Nehemiah 5:1-13

Summary: Nehemiah challenged the social and economic systems of his own society. He realized that, while the practices of those who held a majority of the wealth in Jerusalem were legal, they were also demoralizing. Landowners and moneylenders were taking pledges on debts, resulting in the marginalization and oppression of many. The whole community was divided and distracted from its mission. Nehemiah’s response to this internal conflict was to call he community beyond legality to justice, recognizing that if Jerusalem was to prosper, it needed to have prosperity for the whole community, not just for the few.

Series:  "Nehemiah: Rebuilding Urban Christian Community” (Part V)
Title:    "Weakness and Strength."
Text:    Nehemiah 4:1-14

Summary: Strong opposition often times leads to personal discouragement. During the first significant stages of rebuilding the city, opposition groups strongly and strategically opposed Nehemiah’s plans and work. These angry people mocked Nehemiah, stirred up trouble, and told him that his plans were feeble and flawed. Nehemiah recognized that they were weak…but that God, the real architect, was indestructible.

Title:    "A New Reality”
Text:    Mark 2:18-22

Summary: We are living in a new reality, a post-incarnation reality. But if God is really with us, why do we have such a hard time living in that present reality? We make our new years resolutions, feel guilty about the past and try to tidy up our lives for a preferable future. And all the while, Jesus is calling us into the sacred present, inviting us to dive into the beautiful mess of life and live more aware, more present, more abundantly!
