21 June 2009     Pastor Rich Theilen     “Going the Extra Mile.”

The word translated goodness in Galatians 5:22 actually has more to do with generosity than anything else.  It’s a rare word in the Bible, but a significant one.  Like all the other fruit of the Spirit, it’s seen in outward actions, but it’s motivated by a heart shaped by the character of Jesus Christ.

June 14 2009     Pastor Rich Theilen     “Being Nice is Not Enough.”

When we think of “kind people,” we often think of people who do nice things or say nice things.  We think of people who help others in need or soothe painful situations.  But kindness, like all the fruit of the Spirit, goes much farther than we often think.  It even concerns how we think about and treat people who seem to deserve anything but kindness and reflects how God has treated us.

7 June 2009     Pastor Rich Theilen     “Keeping Calm—Inside and Out.”

The saying goes that “patience is a virtue.”  It can also be a basic survival skill.  Yet it is often a characteristic that often seems to elude even to those who want it.  This morning, we’ll explore how God’s patience with us can enable us to understand how to be patient with others.  We’ll also consider ways in which patience can go so far that it actually hurts us or others.

31 May 2009      Pastor Dan Collison      "Seeing the Seams"     1 Corinthians 2:1-16

Theme: Relying upon the power of the Holy Spirit for vision

Summary: In A.D. 55 the Christian church in the city of Corinth had a vision problem. The Apostle Paul, their founding pastor, knew that it would take a lot more than good church consulting to straighten things out. In the opening of his first teaching letter Paul challenged the Corinthian church to re-envision themselves as a community of Christians that embraced weakness, nurtured desire for God, and sought the mind of Christ.

24 May 2009     Pastor Rich Theilen     “More Than What’s Missing”

Peace—whether you’re the parent of a soldier, a spouse in a troubled marriage, resident of a neighborhood where crime is a daily concern, or just someone trying to get through –there’s probably someplace in life that you’re looking for it.  Peace is not just the absence of strife or hostility.  Like joy, this third fruit of the Spirit goes much deeper.  Peace, like joy, is something we can have no matter what our circumstances are and no matter what is happening around us.

17 May 2009     Pastor Kyliah Villa     “Joyful, Joyful”

People often talk about “positive attitudes,” “being happy” and other things that are intended to bring smiles to our own and others’ faces.  It would be easy to confuse these kinds of things with joy, the second “fruit of the Spirit” in Galatians 5:22.  While they are related, they are not the same.  Joy goes far deeper than what we say, how we think, and whether or not we smile.  Real joy reaches the deepest part of our souls, but that’s not where it starts.  It starts someplace completely outside ourselves.

10 May 2009 (Mother's Day)     Guest Speaker Reverend Dan Collison     "The Power of Covenant"

A covenant is a formal agreement or treaty between two parties with each assuming some obligation. The Bible has a lot to say about covenants. In the Old Testament Moses understood the power of covenant when he gathered the people of God while wandering in the wilderness. Living far away from the comforts of Egypt, and with memories of Mount Sinai beginning to fade, Moses reintroduced God’s covenant to the people of God. In the New Testament Jesus established a new more powerful covenant that formed the basis for God’s full plan of salvation. In the biblical narratives Moses and Jesus called the people of God to full participation in the power of God’s covenant to invoke passion, provide a present-future vision, and elicit a fresh commitment to God.

3 May 2009     Pastor Rich Theilen     “Got all you need?”

On June 25, 1967, the Beatles participated in the first live global television link.  As 400 million people in 26 countries watched, the “Fab Four” debuted one of the most recognized songs in pop music history:  “All You Need is Love.”  Interestingly, love is the first item mentioned in Paul’s “Fruit of the Spirit” in Galatians 5:22-23.  Join us as we explore why a good understanding of this basic biblical concept is so significant to living out the rest of God’s design for us.
